Why "just talk to it" fails

Most people type a one-line request and get a generic, watery answer. Not because the model is dumb — because the prompt left every decision to the model. The fix isn't technical skill; it's giving the model a job description. These five templates do that.

1. The Role + Task + Format prompt

Copy-paste:

You are a senior [ROLE]. Do [TASK]. Return the result as [FORMAT: bullets / table / 200-word email]. Keep it plain and specific.

Example: "You are a senior email marketer. Write a 150-word welcome email for a plant shop. Return it as a short email with a subject line." Naming the role and the format removes 80% of the vagueness.

2. The "Show, don't tell" example prompt

Models copy structure if you give one. Paste:

Here is the style I want: "[PASTE A SHORT EXAMPLE]". Now write a new one about [TOPIC] in the same voice and length.

This is the fastest way to get output that sounds like you instead of like a brochure.

3. The Constraint Stack

Vague prompts drift. Pin them down:

Write about [TOPIC]. Rules: (1) under 120 words, (2) no jargon, (3) one concrete example, (4) end with a question.

Constraints are not limits — they are the difference between "meh" and usable.

4. The Critic Loop

Don't accept the first draft. Ask it to grade itself:

Review the text above. List 3 ways it is weak for a [AUDIENCE]. Then rewrite it fixing all three.

One extra round takes ten seconds and noticeably improves the result.

5. The Humanize Pass

AI text often reads like a textbook. This pass fixes it:

Rewrite the text to sound like a real person wrote it: vary sentence length, cut filler words (e.g. "delve", "leverage"), add one true detail, and keep the meaning. Do not change the facts.
